Poetry is sadness
Poetry is sadness
bubbling to the surface
and we smack it back down
and it bubbles up again
sometimes a little happiness
crusts on top, light brown
like a layer of cheese
simmering in the oven
it’s a good life we bake
filled though with fallen soufflés
stuffed with eternal sorrows
and serious amid the joys
of cooking, poetry, love and puzzling
our happiness around the problems,
not one long happy joke
marred by an imperfect, unfortunate
punchline
