    This Edition's Poetry

    ZOE

I picked up all the cheap stuff in the supermarket
    And another bottle of wine
    and headed to the checkout.
I spotted one that looked very empty with a young girl on it.

I was tempted to ask her
    whether she got fed up
always being the bottom of lists.
The urge passed and then I asked her how her day had been.
She told me it had been long
but that she got off at nine.
I asked her if she was going to do some partying later.
She told me that she had no one to party with.

I could have said one of a hundred things
    but in the end
    I said nothing.

    As we finished
I thanked her and we gave each other a long look.
Then I went to the video store.
    As I walked in
a ginger haired girl followed me in.
Two American women were in front of me.
One of them stepped on my toe.
    As I walked around
I noticed another ginger haired girl, then another.
I have never seen three ginger haired women together before.
As I walked out with no dvds
    I saw the ginger
    who had followed me in.
    I got into my car
and headed back to my cold house
    alone.
