Disconnection – poem by Bruce Whealton

Disconnection

This is what I want...
I've written about who
I am... hoping that in reading
my poems
you would come to know me.

But what I really want
is something much more.
I want to be in your presence...
I want to see you
I want you to see me
and I want to know that
I touch you -
           bring you serenity
and joy.

This is why I share myself;
why I write and show you
              my visions.
I want you to know me

As long as I am alive
I know that it will not be enough
to share these images of mine
or images of myself.

I don't believe some photograph
of me will make that great an impact -
that's not how it works...
it's about eye contact
                      and smiles...
not just the polite smiles that we
make to each other
daily...

I'm talking about something
more spontaneous...
something that I do not
now
have
or experience...
not in years.

It's as if
I'm invisible
making no impression
anywhere
and I hunger
for something
different.
