Bruce Whealton: On Being a Poet and Other Existential Ideas

Recently, I’ve found that my high school, Southington High School, from Southington, CT, is planning the 25th reunion. It’s a good thing that we are starting now, 11 months from the planned reunion. There are so many people with which to connect. Our class had 565 students that graduated in 1984. It’s hard to imagine that it has been that long!

So, it has been how many years since I’ve been up there to CT? Ten years? Twelve years or more? I think it has been over 12 years. I got this email from a my best friend, from when I was growing up in Southington, Paul Plourde. He says he has been with his current wife now going on 12 years. Wow! It has been that long. I don’t even know her.

So much has happened since then. So, much I’ve written… so much of that life has featured in my poems… about a different life when things were – well, different. Friends from back then drift in and out of our lives, but they didn’t become non-friends. Something else happened… we lost touch, but we are still friends. Paul and I, and others… folks I didn’t even know where my friends.

That was then.
